As an isolated island, Tangier confronts a unique set of obstacles that limit access to adequate health care. The Tangier Island Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, community-based organization committed to bringing modern medicine to the people of Tangier Island.
To accomplish this purpose, we have replaced the aging, 50-year-old Gladstone Memorial Health Center, and built and equipped a new, state-of-the-art health clinic on the island. Opened, dedicated, and named the David B. Nichols Health Center on August 29, 2010, this clinic is now able to provide a wide range of primary and emergency care services including colonoscopies, stress tests, digital x-rays, and hearing tests.
With the physicians of Riverside Medical Group and island Physician Assistant Inez Pruitt providing medical services, the Tangier Island Health Foundation’s mission now is to maintain in perpetuity the new building, the property on which it stands, and the medical equipment it houses.
