Mission Statement

As an isolated island, Tangier confronts a unique set of obstacles that limit access to adequate health care. The Tangier Island Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, community-based organization committed to bringing modern medicine to the people of Tangier Island.

To accomplish this purpose, we will replace the aging, 50-year-old Gladstone Memorial Health Center, and build and equip a new, state-of-the-art health clinic on the island. This clinic will provide primary care, emergency services, and wellness and prevention programs.  For the past 28 years, Dr. David Nichols has loaded boats and aircraft to transport supplies and staff from his White Stone, Virginia family practice to this isolated Chesapeake Bay island, in order to conduct weekly medical clinics for the people of Tangier. Our goal is to perpetuate his dedication.

We plan to carry out this mission through the application of approved medical practices, high ethical standards, and sound financial management.

Who We Are
